Stefanik tops Doheny in 21st Congressional Primary
In the race for the 21st Congressional District Republican Primary, Elise Stefanik beat Matt Doheny.
With a comfortable lead for Stefanik, Doheny conceded the race in a phone call with his opponent and addressed supporters around 10:30pm Tuesday. At the time of concession, Stefanik held a 60%-40% lead with a majority of precincts reporting results.
"This is where Super PACs [Political Action Committees] are going to come in and plan congressional primaries not in the traditional way," said Doheny during his speech. "Even though we're here in the North Country, a rural area, you've seen, for better for worse, a little bit of the future here what's going to happen in Congressional level campaigns, and this is the first. I was quite direct and clear about it on the campaign trail.
Doheny did not take questions from reporters. He has already secured the Independence Party nomination and said he would address whether he will continue his campaign on Wednesday.
Stefanik thanked supporters during her victory speech and also spoke of unity for the party.
Brandon Lewis and Jennifer Lewke have more from both camps.
