$5M worth of heroin seized in the Bronx

NEW YORK -- Officials announced a drug bust in the Bronx that netted two members of what they're calling a major drug trafficking operation.

Rosa Vasquez and Carmen Garcia were arrested on Wednesday morning by officers and investigators from the DEA, NYPD and New York State Police. Officials say the arrests were the result of a long-term investigation and surveillance of a suspected heroin packaging location. That's where they say Garcia and Vasquez met and left in a van.

After following the pair to a parking garage, officials say they ditched the van with the keys still in the ignition. When police searched the vehicle, they say they found about 475,000 street-ready glassine envelopes of heroin, as well as a kilogram of raw heroin. Officials estimate the value of the street-ready heroin at $4,750,000 and say the uncut heroin would have sold for at least $250,000.

The two women are now facing two counts each of criminal possession of a controlled substance.
