Cuomo signs legislation to combat heroin epidemic

BINGHAMTON -- Governor Cuomo held a press conference on Monday to kick off the state's new initiative to combat heroin.

Cuomo and representatives from the legislature, the SUNY system and the State Police were on hand at SUNY Binghamton where the Governor signed the 11 heroin-related bills just passed by the Assembly and Senate last week. The bills include more money for treatment, public awareness and more police to fight the drug.

Cuomo emphasized at the signing that this is not an inner-city problem, but has an impact on New Yorkers around the state.

The new legislation will put 100 new police officers on the street and increase penalties for those who sell the drug. It will also include a public education campaign on college campuses.
