Grand Jury dismisses charges against teen accused in stabbing death
SARATOGA COUNTY -- After reviewing the evidence, a Grand Jury deliberated and handed up its decision to dismiss all charges in the case against a teen accused of killing his mother's fiance.
Matthew Brown, 18, was arrested after the stabbing death of Derick Clark on May 16. Authorities received a 911 call late that night from the home of Clark and Matthew's mother, Heather Brown.
Officials say Matthew called 911 following a domestic incident between his mother and Clark. When Clark learned about the police being called, he reportedly attacked Matthew, while his mother tried to intervene. The teen went into his bedroom and closed the door, but officials say Clark forced his way in, throwing the boy's mother out of the way.
During the ensuing struggle, Matthew allegedly stabbed Clark in the neck with a folding pocket knife, and punctured an artery. The teen called 911 immediately, but Clark died from massive blood loss within minutes.
Saratoga County District Attorney Jim Murphy believes the Grand Jury likely took Matthew's claims of self-defense into consideration when deliberating. "It only makes sense that after finding the charges appropriate, they then applied the defense of justification to the various felonies which gave the defendant an absolute defense for his conduct," he says. "Domestic violence homicides are often the most complicated and emotionally charged cases. I have faith in the work of the grand jury today."
