Explosive device detonates; distroys car in Troy
TROY - The blast on 5th Avenue in Troy Tuesday startled some of those who heard it and frightened other after they were told it was some sort of car bomb.
"We were scared," says Monica Bump, who heard a boom from about a block away. "Our first response was to call our husbands who were out on a job and to let them know we were all okay."
Police said on Wednesday it was not a "car bomb" but a homemade explosive device of some sort that exploded inside a 1990 Jeep Cherokee, blowing out some of the windows and damaging the roof. Police say the Jeep had been reported stolen from Watervliet Monday. Investigators spoke to Joseph Murphy, the Troy man they say registered the car.
"He says he doesn't have any problems with anybody, so he doesn't think it was aimed at him." said Captain Dan Dewolf.
Police say it appears to be a homemade device but not a pipe bomb and nothing with a timer nor any remote detonator. A bomb squad looked for other devices in the area and found none, according to Dewolf. He says the glass blowing out from the windows could have injured anyone walking by.
Dewolf says the FBI, ATF and NY State Police are also investigating.
