Jury selection begins for man accused of rape, attempted murder

COLUMBIA COUNTY -- Jury selection got underway on Wednesday in the case of a man charged with raping a 14-year-old girl, recording the sex acts and then trying to have his victim killed.

The District Attorney says that after the arrest of Perry Pendell, 48, of Chestertown, the man plotted to have the girl killed. Authorities say he attempted to arrange for a fellow inmate at the county jail to commit the crime in an effort to keep her from testifying against him. Police say the inmate alerted officials to the plot.

Pendell is facing 28 felony charges, including attempted murder.
