Vermont Governor to attend regional drug meeting

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) -- Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin is going to be in Massachusetts to meet with most other New England governors to map out a regional response to the growing problem of opioid drug abuse.
Shumlin is planning to attend the Tuesday meeting at Brandeis University in Waltham hosted by Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick.
The meeting is expected to include discussion of how law enforcement can work together to stem the flow of illegal drugs across state lines, along with coordinated approaches to treatment in the region and development of a unified public information campaign.
In January, Shumlin helped prompt a broad public debate about heroin and other opiates by devoting his entire state of the state speech to the issue.
