Swimmer drowns in Adirondacks; another missing

WILMINGTON, N.Y. (AP) -- A Plattsburgh High School senior set to graduate on Saturday has drowned in an Adirondack Mountain river, and another teenage swimmer remains missing.

Taoufik Maknani was 17 and a popular two-sport star at the high school.
Police have not released the name of the missing swimmer.

Authorities say the two were swimming with a small group at The Flume in the Ausable River, a popular spot for cliff jumping and diving near Wilmington Town Beach.

Multiple 911 calls at around 2:10 p.m. Thursday set off a search involving some 100 people from fire and rescue departments and agencies from two counties.

State police say the river is running very high from recent heavy rains, and that's created immense water flow with undertows.

The area is located just off Route 86.
