Medical marijuana advocates criticize Gov. Cuomo
ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) -- Dozens of advocates for legalizing medical marijuana rallying at New York's Capitol are blaming Gov. Andrew Cuomo for stalling the so-called "Compassionate Care Act."
Patients who would benefit from medical marijuana are asking Cuomo on Wednesday to support passing the measure before session concludes this week.
The Democrat said Tuesday he wouldn't sign the bill if it passed both chambers unless some of his concerns were addressed, including banning marijuana smoking and a five-year evaluation period.
The bill was amended by sponsors Sen. Diane Savino and Assemblyman Richard Gottfried to ease some of Cuomo's concerns but did not include a smoking ban.
Conversations between Cuomo, legislative leaders and the bill's sponsors remain fluid as negotiations continue.
