New legislation could lure tech jobs

TROY -- A new bipartisan bill could mean new science and technology jobs in the state.

Speaking at RPI on Monday, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand announced the proposed legislation would help bring $520 million each year to the state for research funding. The bill, dubbed the Transfer Act, would create a competitive grant program of higher learning institutions, federal labs and nonprofit research institutions to help scientists bring their discoveries to the forefront of job creation.

New York State ranks second in the nation in regards to university research funding, but only attracts about 7 percent of the nation's venture capital necessary to grow local businesses.
