Nor'easter to Bring a Heavy to Major Snowfall Tonight into Tuesday Night

A major Nor'easter is expected to develop south of New England tonight, potentially getting stuck near Cape Cod into Tuesday before moving away Tuesday night.  This storm will bring heavy snow and gusty winds at times, causing blowing and drifting snow. There's the potential for whiteout conditions at times, leading to dangerous travel late tonight through Tuesday.  Snow accumulations of 10" to 20" will be possible, especially in the Hudson valley and across western New England with amounts up to 10" in the Mohawk valley and western Catskills.

New Adirondack lands opened for camping, hiking

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) -- A lake-studded region in the central Adirondacks is now open for backcountry tent camping.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Wednesday that 22 tent sites are now available in the Essex Chain Lakes region near Newcomb. Thirteen of the sites are along lakefronts and must be reserved through a permit system administered by the Adirondack Interpretive Center in Newcomb.

Cuomo said access improvements have created increased paddling opportunities.

In addition, the Department of Environmental Conservation has released a draft recreation management plan that proposes to increase public access for outdoor recreation on six tracts of land in the central Adirondacks. It's open to public comment through July 18.

Information about access to the lands and reserving campsites is available on the DEC website.
