East Greenbush teen saved from Schroon River

WARREN COUNTY -- Officials say a 14-year-old boy was pulled out of the rapids of the Schroon River on Thursday.

The Warren County sheriff's Office responded to the scene and found the boy had already been pulled out of the river by Horicon Car 295 Chief James Hayes. According to authorities, Hayes was driving when a teen ran into the road yelling for help.

Hayes then put on a life jacket, used a throw bag, and got into the rapids. That's where he says the teen was pinned by the current to a downed tree. He was able to pull him free and get him to safety on the shore.

The teen, along with his 15-year-old friend who had flagged down Hayes, were tubing when the incident occurred. Both boys had on life jackets, but the victim says his life jacket and tube got tangled in the down tree and got stuck in the rapids. He was able to pull off the life jacket, that he says was pulling him under water, and clung to a tree.

Officials say the current was strong enough to rip of the boy's swimsuit and possibly fracture some ribs while he was pinned against the tree. He was taken to Glens Falls Hospital for treatment.
