Airlines route flights around Ukraine after crash

GLENVILLE Before passengers boarded Malaysia Airlines Flight 17, its route was filed with the International Civil Aviation Organization to approve its flight path.

They take care of all the diplomatic clearances and route the fight plan. There are many variables, primarily weather could be, of course, [and] national disaster like a volcano also traffic, said John Panoski Vice President of the Empire State Aerosciences Museum.

After the route is filed, pilots can still make changes for a variety of reasons. The route taken by Flight 17 took passengers over about a dozen countries using a path regularly flown by Asian and European airlines.

After the crash, Ukraine closed airspace over the eastern border. Most airlines voluntarily adjusted routes to avoid Ukraine. Qantas and Korean Air decided not to fly over the country several months ago.

It's going to cost them in dollars in terms of fuel and time, said Panoski. Obviously fuel and time go together and it's going to be more costly, but they may even reflect that in the fee they charge.
