Truck carrying asphalt overturns in Selkirk

SELKIRK -- Officials say a truck carrying a load of liquid asphalt overturned in Selkirk on Thursday.

Authorities say the incident, which happened just after 11 a.m., left the driver; Wyatt Ward, 24, from Selkirk; with minor injuries and was transported to Albany Medical Center. According to officials, Ward was traveling westbound on Route 396 when the weight of the asphalt shiftee, causing the vehicle to go off balance. The truck drifted into oncoming traffic and crashed into a National Grid pole before drifting into a ravine and settling on its roof.

Liquid asphalt and diesel fuel leaked from the vehicle, and Encon responded to the scene to deal with the spill. The road has been closed since the accident and will remain closed until the early evening hours.

Police say Ward has been ticketed for unsafe speed and more charges could be filed on Friday. The truck involved has been impounded for inspection by Bethlehem Police.
