Troy looks at issue of vacant buildings

TROY -- Residents are gathering in Troy on Tuesday night to discuss a recent rash of fires in Lansingburgh, including in some vacant buildings.
CBS6's Torie Wells reported that there are 562 vacant buildings in the city, and 255 of them are registered.  The City of Troy owns 71 of the buildings, leaving 307 as unregistered.
A spokesperson for the City said that they learn about the buildings when residents report them or when code officials find them.  They try to track down the owners to hold them accountable for the upkeep of the property, but the spokesperson said that it is almost impossible to monitor the buildings constantly.
The spokesperson also said that tracking down the owners can take time.  Some leave the property due to foreclosure.
