State Police locate missing hiker

ONEIDA -- After nearly a week's search, State Police located a missing 84-year-old hiker in Herkimer County.

Donald Combs, 84, from Sauquoit, left a note with his family on July 10, to let them know he was going camping near the Black River Wild Forest Trailhead. The note indicated that he would be home by Friday or Saturday of that week.

When he did not return home, family members contacted 911, and State Police began searching on July 13. Over the course of their search, they scoured nearly 2,000 acres of the Black River Forrest with numerous search teams and police agencies.

On Thursday, State Police Trooper Mark Bender and his K-9 Mandin found Combs alive about a half mile outside the search area. They say he was weak and dehydrated, but alert and able to identify himself.

Combs was airlifted out of the area and taken to St. Luke's Memorial Hospital in Utica for treatment.
