Rotterdam power outage caused by lightning strike

ROTTERDAM -- About 200 National Grid customers in Rotterdam were without power on Thursday because of a lightning strike.

Patrick Stella from National Grid says the lightning damaged an underground cable near Curry Road, causing an outage on a nearby overhead line on Wednesday evening. "When there is a problem on an underground cable like this," he says, " it takes crews longer to find the problem simply because they cannot look up and see the line." Crews had to continually test the cable until the issue was located.

The damaged underground cable (pictured) was removed and replaced. Power was restored by approximately 6 p.m. on Thursday.
