Fundraiser For Joe Hennessy's Family
On September 5, 2013 the Capital Region lost a long-time fixture in the world of professional sports and entertainment. Joe Hennessy Sr. passed away suddenly leaving behind his wife JoEllen and newborn son Jack.
Professional sports fans in the Capital Region were introduced to Joe in the 1980's as a member of the Albany Patroons front office, and then most prominently as the General Manager for the Albany Firebirds of the Arena Football League in 1993. In addition to his G.M. duties, Joe was an on-air host for numerous sports talk radio shows and operated a baseball card and collectable store in Latham. When the team moved to Indianapolis, Joe followed. He led the team to the top of the league in revenues, and then was asked to move to Philadelphia to be the General Manager of the Philadelphia Soul. It was there that he led the organization to be #1 in both ticket sales and team sponsorships. In 2005 he returned to Albany to take a job with Capital District Sports (Albany River Rats and Albany Conquest) as the Vice President of Sales. Joe then left the sports world to join the radio industry. For 2 years he was the sales manager at Clear Channel Radio , and then most recently a member of the corporate sales staff at the Times Union Center.
Those of us that have had the honor and privilege to either know Joe or work with Joe, know the huge void that his passing will leave on the area. A fund has been set up through First Niagara Bank to assist his wife with funds to make sure Baby Jack can have the life that Joe was working hard to provide for him. Donations can be dropped off at any Capital Region First Niagara Bank location, the Times Union Center Executive Offices, or mailed to either of the following:
