Converted Pitcher Gives South Troy Dodgers a Lift

Troy, NY - Thanks to having won their first two games Tuesday at the Connie Mack World Series Qualifier, the South Troy Dodgers were able to save their pitching staff Wednesday at Geer Field.

That meant first baseman John Novenche made his first pitching appearance since he was a 12-year-old.

"Since everybody was saying I couldn't do it," joked Novenche following his five innings of work against Frozen Ropes (TX), "it was kind of fun proving everybody wrong."

"We thought it was a joke that he was going to start," said Dodgers shortstop Kevin Smith.

Regardless of how well Novenche did or did not pitch, it's likely his last trip to the mound this summer.

"He won't get many innings," said a laughing South Troy head coach Kevin Rogers.  "But he did okay."

Nobody in the Dodgers' dugout was laughing about not having to burn one of their regular pitchers in a game they did not need to win.  And they've got the recent Shenendehowa graduate to thank for it.

The rain delayed pool play will wrap up Thursday morning.  South Troy's next game will be 5:00pm Thursday at Geer Field.  The winner of the Qualifier will advance to the Connie Mack World Series in Farmington, NM.
