Positively Upstate: Ronald McDonald House Charities radiothon
ALBANY, N.Y. (WRGB) - A safe haven in Albany for families with seriously ill children needs your help this weekend. CBS6 is proud to be partnering with the Ronald McDonald House Charities for its 18th annual radiothon this Saturday, January 19th.
Even the smallest donation can help in the biggest of ways for children like 3-year-old Destiny Dundon. She was recently diagnosed with leukemia and is currently staying with her mother, Samantha, at the RMHC near Albany Medical Center.
“She has been phenomenal,” Samantha says of her daughter. “She takes all her chemo meds and everything with a quiet grace. She knows she has to do. She doesn’t like it but she does it.”
The RMHC provides Samantha and Destiny a place to stay while Destiny is getting treatment. It's a service they provide countless families a year. Samantha says she didn’t know what to expect coming to live in a strange place. But she says the moment she walked through the doors, she felt like family.
According to Ronald McDonald House Charities, the 25 bedroom house in Albany serves over 650 families per year and is supported by 200 active volunteers. It’s mission is to help families focus on their sick children and not worry about paying for a hotel room to be nearby or cooking meals each night.
“It’s not just a house. It’s a home,” Samantha says. “Until you need it, you never know how special it is.”
