Positively Upstate: Saratoga boy aspires to be a ninja
SARATOGA, NY (WRGB) When you ask your kids what they want to be when they grow up – you’re probably not expecting them to say ‘ninja.’ But it’s exactly what 9-year-old Ollie Huss of Saratoga Springs wants to be; and he’s well on his way!
CBS6 visited Ollie in his gym, the Saratoga Ninja Garage, which was hand-built by his father in their garage.
“I usually do these rings.” He says pointing up to a series of hanging loops. “There’s a lot of things you can do with them.”
Ollie is training to become an ‘American Ninja Warrior’ athlete and compete professionally. His father, nicknamed ‘Pepper War Eagle,’ says their family has been immersed in the ‘ninja world’ for 2 years. He fully supports his son’s aspirations.
“He comes home from school and goes directly here.” He says. “(and) … he does his homework right there.” Pepper says pointing to a table in the gym.
Ollie spends hours in his gym working on different obstacle courses both by himself and with other kids. There are rings, walls, monkey bars, ropes – you name it, it’s there.
“I usually work on one course.” Ollie says. “And work on it for a long time. And then I see if I can beat the time.”
Ollie’s father says the Saratoga Ninja Garage often hosts ‘open gym’ days where other kids from the community are invited to train. It’s even offered camps during the summer months. He says thousands have come through its doors so far.
“It’s something where kids can take on their own training. Kids teach other kids and they figure stuff out.” He says.
