SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (WRGB) - Firing up a cake baking business wasn't always on the radar for Evelyn Keplinger. Especially out of her own kitchen.

“I didn't think it was going to go anywhere. If I did, I would have picked a different name,” she said of Treatie Beatie Cakes By Evelyn.

In the beginning, it was baking cakes for kids birthdays, friends and families.

“Then my husband kept saying, 'You know, you really should just start a business on your own,’” Keplinger said.

So, eight years ago she got a permit and did. All out of her own kitchen. It was a new adventure she wasn't quite sure of at first.

"I thought, ‘Who's going to buy a cake from someone out of their home? But to my surprise, it just grew and grew,” she said.

Her cakes go from the classic and elegant to the fun and crazy.

“It's all about the details. That's everything to me,” Keplinger said.

Or if you're undecided, peacock on one side and Harley Quinn and The Joker on the other.

“I thrive on a challenge. I really do,” Keplinger said.

Keplinger travels extensively to study with other bakers and improve her trade. She's won several national awards and recently got attention for a cake for a wedding of 750 people in Albany.

These days, Keplinger is mostly focusing on weddings and big events but still had enough time to whip together a cake for our news crew.

When I asked Keplinger what she enjoys the most about what she does, she says the happiness her cakes bring people.

“When they walk in and you see tears you know you did something right. So, it's the joy that it brings. It really is,” Keplinger said.
