31 years since fatal Schoharie bridge collapse
MONTGOMERY COUNTY -- It's been 31 years to the day since an unprecedented thruway bridge collapse in Montgomery County.
Ten people were killed in the collapse over the Schoharie Crossing in Fort Hunter.
At the moment when the bridge collapsed, a tractor trailer and four cars were crossing.
Authorities determined that snowmelt, combined with nearly six inches of rain, led to river flooding, and that the fast-moving floodwater compromised the integrity of the bridge.
