Albany Common Council to vote on Albany Police Chief appointee
ALBANY, NY (WRGB) The Albany Common Council will meet on August 21 to vote on the next Albany Police Chief.
Albany Mayor Sheehan had announced that her appointee choice was Eric Hawkins, a police chief out of Michigan.
Mayor Sheehan said that Chief Hawkins’ experience and commitment to community policing, and to the well-being of the members of the police department, set him apart from other candidates.
Chief Hawkins told reporters that he is excited about the prospect of becoming Albany’s next police chief, and was drawn to the city because of the national attention it has received for its community policing efforts. He said he is committed to continuing those policies while also building on them.
His pending appointment comes as the city has seen a recent spike in deadly violence that has prompted a citywide discussion about solutions.
