Austerlitz traffic stop nets two drug arrests, cocaine worth $15,000
AUSTERLITZ -- Two Massachusetts residents face drug charges after a traffic stop in Austerlitz early Saturday evening.
Columbia County Sheriff David P. Bartlett reports that at about 6:31 p.m., K9 deputy Travis VanAlstyne saw a 2014 Acura traveling on State Route 203 with dark tinted side windows. The deputy performed a traffic stop, and encountered two occupants in the vehicle. He also smelled a strong odor of marijuana in the vehicle.
The sheriff said the female driver, Jessica Fitzgerald, 26, of Pittsfield, Mass., was driving with a suspended license and had a straw in her possession that contained cocaine residue. A small amount of marijuana was also found in the car.
A search of the male passenger, Lindsey Cobbs, 25, also of Pittsfield, Mass., led deputies to approximately 153 grams of cocaine, with a street value of about $15,000.
Both parties were transported back to the Sheriff's Office for processing. During further interview with Fitzgerald, she was found to possess 5 Oxycodone pills, a controlled substance for which she did not have a prescription. She had indicated the she was traveling from New York City to Pittsfield.
Cobbs was arrested and charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the Second Degree (Class A Felony) and Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the Third Degree (Class B Felony).
Fitzgerald was arrested and charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the Seventh Degree (Class A Misdemeanor), Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle in the Third Degree (Class U Misdemeanor), Unlawful Possession of Marijuana (Violation), and having illegal side-window tint (Traffic Infraction).
Both defendants were arraigned before Judge Brandon in Claverack Town Court. Cobbs was remanded to the Columbia County Jail with no bail. He is scheduled to appear in Austerlitz Town Court on April 27. Fitzgerald was remanded to the Columbia County Jail in lieu of $1,000 bail/$2,000 bond. She will appear in Austerlitz Town Court on May 2, 2018.
