Backpack Heroes: Dealing with food insecurity (WRGB)

SCHENECTADY, NY (WRGB)--Its technical name is food insecurity, but to a child who is not eating regularly or well, being at risk of hunger is simply an empty stomach that can lead to listlessness, in some cases depression, and often to poor grades.

Making sure that no child goes hungry is the whole purpose of the Backpack Heroes program and CBS6 is proud to partner with Fidelis Care and the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York to put a backpack filled with nutritious food on thousands of kids' backs each Friday as they head home from school for the weekend.

Liz Bishop visited the Schoharie Elementary School where the backpack program is hard at work putting smiles on kids' faces.
