FORT ANN -- Fire crews worked into the night after a fire tore through a barn on Deweys Bridge Road in Fort Ann on Sunday evening.
The owner of Burch Family Farm tells CBS6 that hay in the barn ignited, triggering the blaze that killed dozens of cows and pigs.
Richard Burch says he lost about 80 pigs and 30 cows. About 60 cows and a dozen pigs escaped and survived.
Burch says he's owned the farm for about 25 years. He says he doesn't have insurance on the barn, but is still determined to clean up and try to rebuild.
Fort Ann Fire Chief Kevin Lovely says 16 departments were called to bring in water tankers. Four firefighters were treated for heat injuries. Fire crews were on scene until around 2:00 AM. Chief Lovely says the specific cause of the fire is under investigation.
