SCHENECTADY (WRGB) – Upstate CBD opened its doors on Union Street in Schenectady this weekend.

Owner Donald Andrews owned a vape shop in Scotia and said he saw a growing demand for CBD products from his customers. So he expanded to a new shop with all CBD products.

He sells several different CBD products. You can use some topically on your skin, there are edibles, tinctures that you dissolve in your mouth, hemp buds, and even products for your pets.

CBD is cannabidiol. It’s a compound found in the cannabis flower. “The cannabis plant has 2 species - the marijuana plant which is high in THC and then you have the industrial hemp plant which is high in CBD.” Andrews said.

Andrews says CBD has a lot of therapeutic benefits to it, including anti-inflammatory, sleep promoting, pain modulating, antidepressant, anti-anxiety, tumor suppressant, and more.

CBD is considered legal and safe and it doesn't give you the euphoric psychoactive feeling that marijuana does.

But CBD is not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration. This past Friday the FDA held a hearing to gather more information about the compound. No decisions were expected immediately, but the FDA says it’s an important step towards clarifying regulations.

Andrews thinks it should be regulated to make it easier for consumers. “Some CBD companies don’t label their product properly, they don’t put the milligram dosages on there correctly, they don’t put all the ingredients on there correctly.” He said. “Do your research and be careful where you get your CBD from, you want to make sure you get a quality pure product.”
