Schenectady, NY WRGB) -- Schenectady Firefighters responded to a fire on Kelton Avenue this morning. The call came in shortly before 6:30am.

A resident says she woke up and smelled smoke, so she called for her mother and brother. "He went up to the back room which leads to the attic and he saw it was on fire." Alexis Thompson said.

The family called 9-1-1 and made it out of the house safely. The Red Cross says it is helping 6 members of the family.

The fire chief says they arrived to find heavy fire on the second floor and in the attic. Thick smoke billowed into the air.

The chief says they thankfully had no problems with water or equipment, and they put the fire out quickly.

The cause is now under investigation.
