No injuries in blast at plant where 2 died in '16 explosion
GLENVILLE, N.Y. (AP) -- Emergency crews are at the scene of an explosion at an upstate New York asphalt plant where two workers died last year when a tanker truck exploded.
Officials in the Schenectady County town of Glenville say no one was injured in Thursday morning's explosion at Mohawk Asphalt Emulsions.
The blast tore off the top of a tank and rattled guests at a newly opened hotel nearby.
Thomas Corners Fire Chief Garth Riccio said the plant was evacuated. They made plans to evacuate the nearby hotel as a precaution, but were able to put the fire out quickly.
Employees were at the plant when the explosion occurred around 6:30am.
The cause is being investigated.
The DEC was also on scene. They say the fire did not contaminate the river, and the scene was contained.
Two workers were fatally injured and a third was hurt in October 2016 when a when a tank exploded while they were transferring liquid asphalt between tanks.
The company that owns the plant was fined $17,000 by the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
