Cyclists rally for E-riding bill (WRGB)

ALBANY, NY (WRGB)--Bicycles with small motors, also called E-bikes, were the center of attention outside the Capitol Wednesday as bicycling enthusiasts rallied for lawmakers to clearly legalize their use.

The federal government considers E-bikes consumer products, and not motor vehicles, and the state's position isn't clear.

Bicycling advocates say not enough people understand the technology, and it's holding E-bikes back in New York.

"There's a lack of understanding about what the new technology is. There's concern about enforcement in New York City about regulating this new class of bikes," said Paul Winkeller of NY Biking Coalition.

This is the third year an E-biking bill has appeared before the legislature to clarify the issue.
