Defying polls, Nixon looks to upset Cuomo in NY gov primary
ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) -- Democratic primary voters in New York will soon decide the winner of the contest between Gov. Andrew Cuomo and liberal challenger Cynthia Nixon.
Thursday's matchup is emblematic of the ongoing battle within the Democratic Party between moderate incumbents and progressives who say they have failed to deliver on liberal priorities.
Nixon, a longtime activist and former star of "Sex and the City," has hammered Cuomo over lack of investment in New York City subways and failures to address income inequality and corruption.
Cuomo, meanwhile, plays up his efforts to take on President Donald Trump and says Nixon isn't qualified to lead the nation's fourth largest state.
Polls show Cuomo is far ahead, but Nixon says those surveys don't take into account many liberals eager for fresh leadership.
