First recreational pot shop to open in the Berkshires
GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass. (WRGB) - The Theory Wellness shop off Route 7 is the first recreational marijuana dispensary coming to Great Barrington.
It’s a town with around 7,000 people. This store will likely be the guinea pig.
"This will give time for others to open for us to smooth for us to figure out how to handle traffic,” Town Select Board Vice Chair Ed Abrahams said.
Abrahams says the town's getting six percent of the shop's sales. Abrahams says there are several other dispensaries in the works. Those shops, he says, won’t likely be up and running until the spring.
As far as shopper numbers, they're not sure what to expect, but the store and town officials have planned ahead for the foot traffic.
"We've gone from a staff of 5 to close to 30," says Theory Wellness Dispensary Manager Teva Smith.
Outside the store, three Great Barrington police officers will direct traffic for the first week in business. Chief William Walsh says his officers are also getting special training on how to deal with a new kind of marijuana customer base.
Walsh says the store is paying the department for their services.
“Because it's all brand new it's hard to anticipate what to expect, but eventually the dust will settle, so to speak and every town will have one,” Walsh said.
Walsh says the best way to approach this is to play it by week, to get a better grip on creating organized cannabis chaos in the berkshires.
It’s first come first serve, but no one gets a blank check. Below are store limits to how many of each product you can buy in one trip:
- 1/2 oz of flower
- 3 pre-rolls
- 1 cartridge
- 1 extract
- 1 of each chew type.
- 1 infusion
You also can’t buy more than 28 grams of anything in one day.
The doors open at 10 a.m. on Friday.
