SYRACUSE, N.Y. — A former postal carrier could face five years in prison for dumping mail addressed to Onondaga County recipients in a wooded area about 100 miles from Syracuse.
Tanner Brown, 25, of Cobleskill, pleaded guilty in federal court to one felony count of delaying the mail, officials said.
Brown admitted that between Jan. 1 and July 24, 2019, while working for the United States Postal Service, he intentionally failed to deliver 5,833 pieces of mail. He dumped the mail in the village of Sharon Springs.
Sharon Springs, which is about 100 miles from Syracuse, is in Schoharie County. Officials said Brown dumped some of the mail in a grassy field, and the rest of it in a wooded area underneath a pile of tires. When agents recovered the mail, they said it was wet, dirty and covered in bugs.
In addition to five years in prison, Brown could face a $250,000 fine. He will be sentenced on Aug. 4.
