SCHAGHTICOKE -- Officials with the Rensselaer County Sheriff’s Office say 55 year-old Janet Henderson died in a house fire early this morning, around midnight, at a home on East Street in Schaghticoke. Emergency responders tried to rescue Henderson, but they were unsuccessful. Officials say her husband was able to get out in time, but two dogs and a cat were also trapped.

Crews had to rip off the top of the building while trying to get Henderson out.

Officials say a death like this hits hard in a tightly-knit town.

"For the family and for the victim itself, it’s a terrible tragedy. There are no words you can express to make that better. It’s a terrible tragedy for the community itself and the family," says Sgt. Matt Trolio of the Rensselaer County Sheriff’s Office.

The cause of that fire is still under investigation. That will be handled by the state fire marshal’s office.
