Greene County Correctional Facility investigating inmate death

GREENE COUNTY N.Y. (WRGB) - The mysterious death of an inmate in Greene County has the attention of people across the country as pleas for answers go viral on social media.

Questions are circulating of how Anthony "Trey" Myrie turned up dead just hours after allegedly speaking on the phone with his wife from a phone at Greene Correctional Facility.

Family of Myrie, who was serving a seven-year sentence for criminal sale of a controlled substance, say his wife was notified by the jail that Myrie was in critical condition - and then, that he was dead - with no further explanation.

The story was shared thousands of times, even by well-known rappers like Cardi B and Meek Mill.

On Thursday, the Department of Corrections responded to the incident, saying Myrie was pronounced dead on Monday "...following an incident involving several incarcerated individuals..."

The statement went on to say, "The investigation into the incident is ongoing and the Department has no further comment."

"It's horrific," said Karen Murtagh, executive director for Prisoners' Legal Services. "The chaplain calls the family member and tells the family member that their loved one has died, but that's really it."

Murtagh says they don't typically say how the inmate died.

"It could be that the Department of Corrections actually does not know and they don't want to give misinformation to the family," she said.

She says one big question would be how the department responded, in terms of providing medical care, if Myrie's death resulted from some sort of injury.

But she says there's a common problem in finding that out.

"I don't think I've ever seen a report on a death come out in under a year, so that is way too painful for a family to have to deal with," Murtagh said. "They need answers now."

We reached out to Albany Medical Center. Officials there say Myrie may not have been a listed patient when transported there, explaining why his family couldn't get answers from the hospital as they claim.
