Local Red Cross staffer deploys for Florence relief efforts
ALBANY (WRGB) – As of Thursday September 14th, 31 local Red Cross volunteers have deployed to help Hurricane Florence relief efforts. They’ve been sent to North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virgina.
On Thursday, the Red Cross of Northeastern NY’s Chief Operating Officer Ed Cubanski flew out to Columbia, SC. He's prepared to be there for a minimum of two weeks. He says he'll likely take on a planning role - but it depends on the need. He’s been with the Red Cross for only four months, but jumped at the chance to help.
“There was no hesitation in the word ‘yes’.” Cubanski said.
This is Cubanski's first deployment with the Red Cross, but it's not his first experience with hurricane relief response. He served with the Coast Guard for 28 years. He was a Commanding Officer in New Orleans and worked during several hurricanes.
“I just love helping people and alleviating suffering…It's a natural transition from the Coast Guard over to this great organization.” Cubanski said.
