FORT EDWARD, N.Y. (AP) -- A 51-year-old man has been sentenced for strangling his 95-year-old grandmother inside her northern New York home last year.
The Post-Star of Glens Falls reports Kevin Gonyea was sentenced Friday in Washington County Court in Fort Edward to 15 years to life in prison.
He pleaded guilty in January to a second-degree murder charge in the slaying of Leona Twiss. Authorities say she was killed July 9, 2017 inside her home in the town of Fort Anne, on the southeastern edge of the Adirondacks 55 miles (88 kilometers) northeast of Albany.
Gonyea and his wife, Melissa, were living with Twiss, who had advanced dementia.
Melissa Gonyea faces up to 14 years in prison after pleading guilty to charges that included tampering with physical evidence and hindering prosecution.
