Albany, N.Y. (WHAM) - Starting later this month, New York state will raise the age for smoking from 18 to 21.

On Wednesday, November 13, the legal age for purchasing tobacco and e-cigarette products will go up.

It applies to traditional cigarettes as well as electronic cigarettes and vaporizers. According to Department of Health data, 27 percent of high school students in New York State are now using e-cigarettes.

Governor Andrew Cuomo said the decision was made to prevent more tobacco products from "getting into the hands of our youth". He signed the bill into law in July.

Sixteen states have approved raising the smoking age to 21, though in some the changes won't take effect until later in 2019 or in coming years.
