NY attorney general hosting 'Drag Story Hour' event for 'families with children'

New York Attorney General Letitia James is hosting a "Drag Story Hour" event in New York City, a move that comes as several GOP-led states seek to prohibit drag performances in front of children.

Families and their children are invited "to join Attorney General James, Drag storytellers, and city and state elected leaders" this Sunday for the drag queen story hour event.

While drag activities have been criticized by many as being inappropriate for children, others, including NYC Mayor Eric Adams, have publicly announced support for drag queen story activities for kids.

Drag storytellers, and the libraries and schools that support them, are advancing a love of diversity, personal expression, and literacy that is core to what our city embraces," Adams said last year. "At a time when our LGBTQ+ communities are under increased attack across this country, we must use our education system to educate. The goal is not only for our children to be academically smart, but also emotionally intelligent."

The drag queen story hour event this weekend with New York's attorney general is being co-sponsored by several groups, including Drag Story Hour NYC.

Drag Story Hour NYC, which holds events for kids as young as three years old, is a frequent recipient of public funds. Since 2018, the group has received hundreds of thousands of dollars in taxpayer funds to bring their events to fruition, according to The New York Post.

In response, city officials in opposition to the events have considered proposals to strip funding from any school bringing drag queens into its facilities to speak to children.

NYC is spending taxpayer dollars to bring adult drag queens into elementary schools across the city to perform for small children. This is unacceptable and grotesque, and follows a deeply disturbing national pattern," New York City councilwoman Vickie Paladino tweeted after learning how much public funding was going towards drag queen story time events. "Progressives may have no problem with child grooming and sexualization, but I do. This will not happen on my watch. Kids deserve a quality education free from political manipulation and sexual content."
