Officials: Niskayuna woman arrested, accused of possessing untaxed cigars, tobacco
ALBANY, NY (WRGB) The New York State Department of Taxation and Finance has announced that a Niskayuna woman was arrested, accused of possessing untaxed cigars and loose tobacco.
Officials say 35 year old Priyanka Patel is facing charges in Niskayuna and St. Jonsville.
Investigators say Patel is expected to appear in St. Johnsville Village Court on July 25 to face misdemeanor charges of being in possession of more than ten pounds of untaxed tobacco and 500 untaxed cigars. She's expected in court in Niskayuna on August 1st face tax evasion charges in connection to more than 440 pounds of tobacco as well as charges on possession charges in connection to the tobacco.
Investigators say a team entered the Hari Krishna Enterprise, Inc. in St. Johnsville. There, according to the New York State Tax Department, the business is accused of not having a valid Certificate of Registration to sell cigarette and tobacco products.
Between the business and a rental vehicle later found in Niskayuna, she's accused of possessing 11,573 untaxed cigars and 1,400 pounds of untaxed loose tobacco.
“Criminals who deal in untaxed tobacco products deprive communities of revenue needed for vital public services, including social programs and anti-smoking initiatives,” said Acting Commissioner Nonie Manion. “We’ll continue to work with our partners in law enforcement to bring these criminals to justice.”
