Update: Driver dies in fiery Watervliet car crash
WATERVLIET, N.Y. (WRGB) - A late-night deadly crash ended in front of Conroy's Bait Shop in Watervliet. But it started a town away in Colonie.
Colonie Police say around 11 p.m. Tuesday, an officer spotted a car going 75 MPH in a 45 MPH zone on Troy-Schenectady Road.
The officer tried to pull the car over but it sped off towards Watervliet.
The Colonie officer notified Watervliet Police. By the time they caught up to the car, it had crashed.
Witnesses say the driver lost control on 19th Street, knocked out a light post, and rolled over before bursting into flames.
CBS6 spoke with several neighbors who live on that block who were too emotional to go on camera. They say they witnessed the gruesome crash and some even tried to help put out the fire.
"There was an effort that was combined between the officers and civilians to try and assist the individual that was in the vehicle," said Watervliet Police Chief Mark Spain.
They weren't able to get the driver out. Police were on scene all night doing accident reconstruction.
They shut down a large stretch of 19th Street for hours as they tried to map out the car's path, and as they cleaned up the debris.
Police say they're still piecing it all together but they're thankful no one else was hurt.
