Red Cross facing a critical blood shortage
TROY (WRGB) – The Red Cross says they’re facing a critical blood shortage nationwide. They say blood and platelet donations are being distributed at hospitals faster than they can be collected. Now they’re encouraging people to donate.
The Red Cross says they usually see a dip in donations during the winter, because of flu season and snow storms. Here in the Capital Region, Red Cross leaders say this winter has been especially rough.
“About 600 drives have been canceled, so we're missing about 17,500 units of blood.” Rod MacNeil, team supervisor for the Red Cross said. “We need all blood types, especially the Os.”
The Red Cross held a blood drive at the EOC in Troy Tuesday, but they host drives almost daily.
All eligible blood donors are urged to make an appointment by using the Red Cross Blood Donor app, visiting redcrossblood.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).
