School district letter alerts parents to alleged abduction attempt

This letter was sent home to parents in the Greater Johnstown School District Friday.

JOHNSTOWN -- A letter sent to parents and guardians in the Greater Johnstown School District indicates someone attempted to abduct an elementary student on Wednesday.

According to the letter from Supt. Patricia N. Kilburn, a tall, thin, blonde man, apparently in his early 20's, approached a student who was returning home from Family Fun Night, near her home. The letter states that an attempt to grab the child was made, and that police were informed.

In the letter, Kilburn asked parents to reinforce the need to be alert, and how to react in such a situation.

The letter also directs parents to a list of safety reminders posted on the district's website.

CBS6 reached out to Supt. Kilburn after the letter was sent. In a statement, she tells us that the student who reported the alleged abduction was female, and that police regularly patrol the school grounds and neighborhoods. Kilburn says she's also available to meet with any parent who wishes to discuss the incident.
