Terminally ill Shen HS sophomore gets early honorary diploma

"His legacy for us is that life is worth living,” Shenendehowa Central Schools Superintendent L. Oliver Robinson said.

All within a week, the class of 2020 got Jacob Monday what he wanted. It was a day just for him, where he got an honorary diploma as a sophomore.

"A usual graduation takes a whole year so for us to do it together, it took us a lot of work,” says 2020 class president Jack Voce.

Jacob has a rare form of bone cancer. He's opted to stop treatment so he can enjoy what time he has left. This was one of his biggest wishes that he can now check off.

"Jacob, all these people are here for you today,” said a school official.

"You have inspired me and countless others by your zest for living on your terms,” Robinson said.

Robinson says Jacob is the first Shen high school student to ever receive an honorary diploma.

The day wouldn't have been complete without a special shout-out.

"I just wanted to say congratulations and happy graduation. I'm thinking about you and I love you, and I continue to pray for you, and I hope I get a chance to see you soon,” said actor Chris Pratt in a video message.

Jacob got to meet Chris Pratt in person. His next wish is to meet Ellen DeGeneres.
