TROY (WRGB) – Thousands of people braved the bitterly cold temperatures for the 71st annual Troy Turkey Trot.

More than 7,200 people registered for the race, but organizers says the weather often discourages people.

The event raises money for the Regional Food Bank of NENY and Joseph’s House & Shelter. This year they raised almost $16,000 dollars, up from $13,500 last year. They also collected non-perishable food items.

Organizers had special additions to keep everyone warm. They had warm-up sessions, patio heaters near the start and finish lines, a warming tent, space blankets, and people could warm up in the Troy Atrium.

We spoke with runners who said the Turkey Trot is all about tradition, so they weren’t letting the cold stop them – they just wore a lot of layers! Hear their reactions in the video above.

The men's 10-K winner was Ryan Udvadia from Albany, finishing in just under 32 minutes. And the women's 10-K winner was Karen Bertasso, who finished in just under 38 minutes.
