Two NY State Police troopers struck by vehicle on I-90
State police confirm two troopers are in serious condition in the hospital after being struck by a vehicle on Eastbound I-90 in East Greenbush early Sunday morning.
Police say troopers Brent Karow and Shane Swartz were investigating a single vehicle property damage incident in the median at mile post marker 7.7 on I-90, at about 4 a.m. They had put out flares, along with emergency lighting to assist a tow truck in removing the vehicle from the median.
Around 5:15 AM, Rensselaer County 911 received numerous calls for a crash involving a police vehicle. NYSP dispatch was unable to reach the officers at the scene, and other units were sent to check on them
North Greenbush Police Department arrived first at the scene, followed by responding State Police units, EMS, and fire units. Arriving responders found the injured troopers and tow truck operators, who had been in the same vehicle.
Investigation determined that a 2010 Mercury sedan driven by Christopher Neumann, 26, of Castleton, failed to move to the right and collided with the patrol vehicle. After striking the Troop car, Mr. Neuman's vehicle continued and struck both Troopers and Mr. Waite. Trooper Karow was thrown approximately 70 feet into the median. Trooper Swartz was thrown and trapped underneath the tow truck.
Both tow truck operators were also injured. Mr. Waite was also struck by the vehicle, and the other tow truck operator by flying debris. Mr. Neuman, was also injured in the crash.
Tpr Karow suffered multiple lacerations, fractures and internal injuries and is listed in serious but stable condition after surgery to control internal bleeding. He is currently in ICU.
Tpr Swartz suffered multiple lacerations, fractures and internal injuries and is listed in serious but stable condition. He is undergoing surgery at this time that is expected to take 6-7 hours.

Trooper Karow, 34, is a 6 year veteran of the state police and works out of SP Guilderland.
Trooper Swartz, 34, is a 4 year veteran of the state police and works out of SP Brunswick.
Both troopers, Waite Sr., and Neuman were transported to Albany Medical Center.
