Capital Region, N.Y. (WRGB): The US Geological Survey reports a 3.1 magnitude earthquake occurred Wednesday morning at 6:43am in South Glens Falls.
Many viewers called the newsroom reporting shaking in their home all over our area but especially in Saratoga, Warren and Washington counties closest to the epicenter.
Earthquakes are measured through the Richter Scale which is not linear but instead logarithmic. Quakes can be up to a magnitude 10 with each level or magnitude in the Richter Scale bringing 10x the amount of shaking and 33x the amount of energy. A magnitude 3.1 like the one felt in far northern Saratoga county early Wednesday morning is considered minor. Shaking can be felt but damage is unlikely.
