Video shows two people stealing donated bottles

MELROSE, NY - Surveillance cameras were rolling as two people make off with bags local firefighters say were filled with bottles donated by residents.

Firefighter Zackary Valyou says Tuesday after 10 AM a van drove up to the Melrose Volunteer Fire Company’s bottle return bin. In the video, two men pop out and start tossing bags into the vehicle.

“As quick as they could they took every single bag of bottles that we had”, Valyou tells CBS 6.

The firefighters we spoke with say the stolen bottles would’ve funded recruiting efforts once redeemed, but it’s not just hurting the fire company, it’s affecting residents in Melrose too.

“Every year we have a breakfast with Santa for the children, and all that is funded by those bottles,” said Valyou.

If you have any information on the theft, you can call the Rensselaer County Sheriff’s Office.
