UAlbany cracks national polls ahead of Elon matchup (WRGB)

ALBANY, NY (WRGB)---UAlbany football is back in the Top 25, coming in at #19 in the Stats FCS Poll and #22 in the FCS Coaches Poll.

The Great Danes' catapulted themselves into the national rankings after beating #7 Villanova on Saturday, the program's first win over a FCS Top 10 team in school history.

UAlbany heads to Elon this weekend with a 3-1 record, but getting here wasn't easy.

The Great Danes led for most of the Villanova game, until the Wildcats scored a touchdown to tie as time expired.

Then, with UAlbany in front 13-10 in overtime, sophomore linebacker Eli Mencer returned a fumble 80 yards to seal the victory.

In addition to his game-winning touchdown, Mencer added 5 1/2 tackles, and for his efforts, was named "CAA Defensive Player of the Week."

It's the second-straight week a Great Dane has been honored for the award.

Last week's winner, Mechanicville native Nate Hatalsky, recorded seven and a half tackles on Saturday, second-most on the team.
